Our home comes with its own proud history. A house full of firsts, it was originally built in 1920 Dr. William & Clara Mann. Dr. Mann was New Bern's first African American physician and worked just up the street at St. Luke's Hospital. Clara was the Supervisor of Elementary Education for Craven County Public Schools. They lived in the home with their children for many happy years.
Notable of their children, Robert "Bob" Mann (1924-2006) played football at the University of Michigan from 1943-1947. He then went on to sign with the Detroit Lions in 1948 where he played ball for two seasons. He played for the Green Bay Packers from 1950-1954. Bob was the first African American player for both teams and franchises. Bob was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of fame in 1988 and was posthumously inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. A man of many talents, Bob began practicing real estate law in Detroit after his last NFL season in 1954.
With many new renovations to our 103-year-old historical home, we are sure to deliver a wonderful experience. We hope to carry on our family legacy which will extend to you as you enter our living spaces at IL Omaggio 411 on George Street in New Bern, NC.
"New Bern was settled in 1710 by Swiss and Palatine immigrants led by Christoph von Graffenried. They named the settlement after Bern, the capital of Switzerland. But long before the Europeans arrived, the Tuscarora Native Americans also lived along New Bern's riverbanks in a village they called Chattoka.
New Bern is the second-oldest colonial town in North Carolina and was the capital of the North Carolina colonial government. For a short period of time it was also the state capital. Given its picturesque setting and growing political prestige, New Bern quickly became known as "the Athens of the South." You'll find the Athens Theater and the Masonic Temple downtown, part of the rich culture of New Bern then, are still very active today.
Step back in time as you walk through the Governor's mansion at Tryon Palace. And top it all off with an ice cold Pepsi, in the city where Pepsi was born. Stroll our downtown and you'll find yourself amongst some of the most beautiful historic districts in the South. No matter your pleasure, there's something for everyone here. We hope you enjoy your visit. " (City of New Bern, 2018)
