Originally purchased by Benjamin Holden for 50 shillings in 1756, Holden Beach is a 100 acre stretch of scenic North Carolina Atlantic waterfront. The island was originally used by Holden and his sons for fishing and cattle grazing, but it soon became the site of several shipwrecks during the civil war. The remains of the CSS Bendigo is still visible off the eastern end of the island during low-tide.
In 1924, Benjamin Holden's grandson, John Holden, surveyed a section of the island for the Holden Beach resort - the first subdivision of beach property in Brunswick County. The island was incorporated in 1969 and in 1986 the Town of Holden Beach dedicated a new bridge, expanding access to the island.
Today, Holden Beach is know for boating, surf fishing, and hiking. The fishing pier is open to all visitors where one can catch Drum, Sea Bass, Croaker, Flounder, Pinfish, and Spot.
While commercial presence on the island is minimal, the causeway leading into the island offers a wide variety of specialty stores, shops, and a grocery store.
